Why Most Websites Under-Perform
Would it surprise you to know that a high percentage of business websites contribute little if any, actual sales and profits to the businesses they represent?
Initially most business website owners we speak to when discussing their website redevelopment needs report poor results from their existing business websites. Guess that's why they're talking to us in the first place? Anyway, after auditing their sites, which included examining website traffic reports (some of them didn't even know what a website traffic report is! don't worry if this is you: just do something about it!), we found a some predictable patterns in the mix. In fact here's...
5 common reasons why most websites don't actually work:
The website wasn't built with a SALES & MARKETING focus: don't get us wrong, this is not "beat up on poor ole IT guys and graphic designer day", but the plain simple fact of the matter is this: most websites are built by web development experts (geeks, computer guys, artists, whatever you want to call em) who usually don't have any formal training or real world experience in the fields of sales and marketing. We think you'd agree that your website is supposed to be a "sales and marketing" tool for your business so here-in lies a major problem does't it? This is without a joke one of the main reasons we've found why most websites produce poor results. At least not up to their potential. Of course competent graphic design, website development, and IT skills are a vital part of the mix. BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE of "sales-focused" content. Remember we're talking about performance-based business websites here.
No website stats tracking and measurement systems in place: Or if there was, either little attention was paid to them, or they were too difficult to interpret, making them next to usesless. No use spending money on a website (and other promotions for that matter), if you have no idea of the results.
Lack of integration with existing marketing and promotions: you would think this would be a no brainer. If you're running promotions via traditional marketing methods such as print ads and the like it makes sense to drive the precious marketing dollar further with website integration right? Yet we find over and over again businessess spending thousands on traditional advertising with no mention of it on their websites. Just look at print ads ion your local paper and you'll see what we mean. Some of them don't even have the website listed in their ad let alone mention of the promotion on their website! This is just crazy!
Outdated technology systems: guess what the number one polled annoyance of web visitors was? (this is a worldwide study and pretty common knowledge within the industry) If you guessed "outdated content" you were right. Most of the time this is due to poor technology systems backing them up. Either the website owner needs to be a computer wizz to update it and there's little communication between the website company and you. Add to this that a ot of websites have just not been setup to be able to be updated by the business owners and it's no wonder why there are so many websites out of date. If you have "last updated 2003" then it's time you got this problem solved! It can be done and recent advances in technology and software systems are making it a lot easier to manage your website in-house.
Poorly supported: your website simply will not reach it's full sales potential if you don't have a relationship with a proactive industry professional. And who doesn't run everytime the phone rings! Keeping up with Google and how to rank on the first page is way too hard for most business owners to even understand let alone do. Just leave it to a professional wno knows what they're doing. What about when the latest techology for stats tracking and reporting becomes available? How will you know? If you aren't kept aware of these things, by a professional who actually gives a hoot about your custom, you can bet your house that a competitor will. If you aren;t kept informed of this stuff then you will eventually slip back in the google ranks - and your sales will suffer.
